A Little Bit of Sparklite™

Wednesday, February 4, 2015

I've been dabbling in Bakelite jewelry collecting for a while now, though my collection is so little I don't often wear my pieces.  So, while I'm building it a little, I always look for cute accessories that are vintage inspired but aren't as expensive as the real thing.  I was surprised to stumble across this Teardrop Sparklite™ Brooch when lurking Etsy one day because it's quite similar.  I love companies that sell Bakelite-inspired pieces and this has the look and feel, but doesn't cost as much as the real thing (thank god, I can't fund two addictions).  If you're looking to read up a little on Bakelite, try here or here.

I'd seen this eShakti dress on a few ladies and was so sad to find that it was no longer on the site when I went to purchase one for myself.  BUT, one of my favorite things about eShakti is that if you wait long enough, they'll often bring pieces "back" and that's exactly what happened.  I love the collar + big buttons on the dress, the bright + happy plaid print and of course, the pockets.  I also think it's my new lucky dress because I found a vintage Butterick pattern while out antiquing that I''d been looking for.  Also, if anyone wants $30 off an eShakti order, comment your email below and I'll send one along.

Where did January go?  I don't know if it's because I was gone for work or what, but I swear January flew by me.  2015 has A LOT to live up to.  In 2014, I got married, my BFF got married and I added a new addition to my family (Ziggy!).  Those are three giant events so I'm hoping that 2015 doesn't disappoint.

I'm a clothes hoarder.  I can't help it--my brain always thinks that it'll find an excuse or event to wear every piece of clothing too.  I definitely tend to neglect this dress, but I think it's just because it's one of my older vintage reproduction dresses.  I love anything tropical/tiki/flamingo themed, which probably explains why I love this dress so much.  It's also a great platform for my tropical inspired accessories.  These Match Accessories pieces are the perfect accent and I love that they are super reminiscent of bakelite.  I wear so much confetti lucite that it's nice to wear a more traditional approach.

  5. Um, Imma need that striped dress REAL BAD. Can I have a coupon code pretty please? (shewasabird at yahoo dot com). Eshakti has some really cute classic shapes and I love like you said, if something goes away, usually it comes back in one shade or another, which is cool! Also, I'm with you on the Bakelite, everything original I ever find on Etsy or Ebay is a) extraordinarily cute and b) a week's salary. I've found a couple things at the flea market but nothing like the doozies I see online. Good to know there are such pretty repro pieces out there for us working girls!! :D Both you girls' outfits are so cute!

  8. I agree, you definitely need it! I have my eye on this one next:

I just sent over the coupon email! And I agree, I have the habit of checking their site every few days to see if what I want has made a return. haha. I also love the fact that I can order my dresses PER-SHORTENED! That's the best thing that's ever happened to me!

And yep, that sounds like my luck EXACTLY. I've seen pieces at some of the antique malls around Nashville but they're as expensive as online minus the shipping so I think I'm going to buy a few more of these pieces and hope I run across some Bakelite eventually that I can afford. haha. And thank you ma'am! : )

  34. It's just so pricey so I'm happy that there are cheaper alternatives for those of us who love the look, but hate hate hate that hefty price tag. Living in a small town with one vintage store (and no good thrift stores) I can never find bakelite for a good price and it crushes my soul.
