Pennant Banners + Yellow Checks

Saturday, January 31, 2015

It's weird to think that this time last year it was snowing in Georgia since it's been in the low 60s lately.  It's definitely my preferred temperature, but I'll take it!  The warmer weather inspired me to bare my shoulders, and break away from my cardigans, boleros and peacoats that I have been wearing as of late.  Hello sunshine, this little Georgia peach has missed you.  I'm sure I've jinxed myself, and Jack Frost will blow some cold air my way now.

I am a sucker for cute prints, and this top (which is really a dress) is one of my all-time favorites.  I bought this dress from Modcloth maybe two years ago, and I instantly knew it was going to be too short for my comfort.  However, the pennant banner print and lovely blue color are too perfect to just sit in my wardrobe so I wear it as a top pretty frequently.  It also has the versatility of being a halter-top or a strapless top.  Wearing dresses as tops is one of my favorite ways to switch up my wardrobe, and it really 'stretches' your pieces.  When people ask one way to make a few pieces of clothing go a long way I always suggest trying to wear a dress as a top.  You never know what the outcome may be!

So, I've had this dress in my closet for quite a while and every now and again, I like to pull it out.  I actually snagged it off eBay a couple of years ago and the seller had written that she'd picked it up at a  Stop Staring! sample sale.  It has the Stop Staring! label inside but I've actually never seen another so maybe it was the only sample of its kind -- who knows, but I love it, yellow always makes me feel happy because it's such a cheery color!

Also, I've been trying to make it a point to switch out my glasses more often.  I have my prescription filled in about 4 pairs now and I try to remember to change it up every now and again.  I've been wearing glasses since elementary school and they're a daily accessory for me, so I might as well make them fun!  My vintage frames that I've had retrofit are my favorites (this pair included) and I'm thinking about taking a few more pairs up to Walmart to have lenses put in.  For ladies that have asked, it's about $30 and all you have to do is sign a waiver and leave your glasses with them for a few days.  I've never had a bad experience, the waiver is really just a precaution, and I LOVE being able to get lenses put in vintage frames that I hunt down for so cheap.

  2. I am a huge fan of wearing dresses as tops! I'll do it a lot with the inexpensive bodycon dresses(from like Rainbow or Wet Seal) that have the printed tops and black bottoms because they're usually too tight on my hips or too short. So I'll pair it with a pencil skirt/circle skirt. I also love to retrofit my vintage frames but had no idea that Wal-Mart did it too! Last time I went to Lens Crafters and paid about $100 I believe. But now I know! :)

  3. Both looking marvelous, ladies!!! I'm smitten with that pennant pattern. We need wayyy more pennant themed clothing, if you ask me.

Amanda, I've been daydreaming about finding one of those very same cherry purses (in either the cream/white or black version) for many years now. It's a true stunner and my eyes shoot open to the size of saucers when I saw you holding one here in this post. It's such a gem - congrats!!!

  5. Thank you for the note about Walmart. I've been sending mine to eyeglass people.com (I've got a bit of a collection myself) and with shipping and all, it costs around $50 and takes a few weeks. Walmart it is!

  9. June: I know you said that you are trying to switch up your glasses. This made me wonder whether or not you have prescription sunglasses. I do not recall seeing them in any photos, but I may be mistaken. I know that I LOVELOVELOVE mine. I cannot imagine driving without them.

I had considered using dresses that I have outgrown as tops, but wasn't sure that that would work UNTIL I saw this post! lol It's such a great idea and you're right - the perfect way to extend the life of a piece and also add some versatility to your wardrobe. My favorite article of clothing that I've had for a while and try to wear sparingly because I can't find any more is a top that is made of a heart print knit material. It has a peter pan collar, puff sleeves and heart buttons. It's like all my favorite cute details in ONE top and it goes with everything, but I try to wear it once a year to make it last. lol

  13. My hair hated me that day, I went with it! haha. And yellow really is a good color to wear on slightly gloomy days, I obviously need more yellow. ; )

  14. YES! That's what I do with bodycon dresses as well, Boohoo has some great ones too, and because they're fitted a lot of the time they stay tucked in better than shirts do.

OH! I'm so glad you found out about this then, $100 just for lenses is INSANE! You'll have to let me know what you Walmart says when you go, I've never had any problems. : )

  15. Thank you, sweet lady! Amelia does sort of have a Veronica Lake thing going! And this purse is one of my favorites, when I bought it, it even had the original mirror and comb in it. I was so excited <3

  17. Thank yo so much, and I totally agree, pennants are just so happy!

Aww, thank you so much! I bought it from one of my favorite vintage sellers in our hometown (who no longer sells) so it's near and dear to me. I actually got an Instagram message from a follower the other day who snagged herself one somewhere! Such a small world! I hope you find one. <3

  18. Oh, you're very welcome! I hope you have as great of an experience as I've had, they're always super nice about it and they usually tell me it'll be a week and I get them back within 3 days. : )

  20. I don't have any because I'm rather forgetful and I have a feeling I'd end up going everywhere and forgetting my real glasses. haha. How do you remember?

  21. Ooo! What a find! That sounds so cool. I love it when vintage has that 'little bit extra' somethingsomething to make it even more special. :D

  22. I remember in part because they can be so costly. My eyeglasses are metal Prada frames that I have had for almost seven years. I always put them back in their case when I take them off. I once left my case in the classroom and didn't realize until I got home. I went straight to my eye doctor the next morning and he have me a new Prada case. My sunnies are Kate Spade, and I also keep them in their case. I have both in my bag at all times, unless I am out on the town with a clutch. Then I leave the glasses in the car. My prescription doesn't require me to wear my glasses at all times as I am near sighted, so if I am being social I don't always need them, especially during the day. I do need them to see my student's faces though. You know the disengaged college elite who sit in the back of classrooms.

Amelia I love your outfit! Such a cute pairing and so fun that it's a dress as a top! And how perfect are those matching BAIT shoes. <3 June, what a find! I have definitely never seen that Stop Staring dress. So much fun! And that is an awesome tip about fitting vintage glasses with new lenses! And Walmart for only $30! Who would have known! I will have to see if I can dig up my pair of 1950's vintage glasses I found at a thrift store in middle school! I hope I kept them around somewhere! I have the hardest time finding glasses that look good on me!
