Friday Favorites #33

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Happy Halloween, ladies! So this isn't a Halloween-themed Friday Favorites because I think by the time a lot of people read this -- it'll be over. Sad!  So here's just some regular favorites that are no less... favorite! haha.  I hope everyone has an amazing Halloween though!!!

So this is more about how stoked I am about finding eShakti.  Finding this website was awesome for my work wardrobe because I can find subtle retro-styled florals and solids that are business casual-appropriate and that look great with a blazer or cardigan.  And I can also find things for casual days.  I'm still admittedly having a bit of an issue getting consistent sizing wit them, but I love them anyways!  The top row are my recent buys, my favorite is the Madras Check Dress and customized the length + made it short sleeved and my wishlist includes the things on the bottom row, check out the detailing on the torso of the Tartan Pleat Dress... amazing!  Still giving them out, so comment below with your email if you'd like a promo code for $30 off.

I'm so in love with Miss L Fire's new AW '14 collection, everything in it is absolutely adorable and I'm smitten.  Everything is so mid 1950's centralized with a modern flare and I always admire when that's executed well.  I'm not a boots girl AT ALL but if I can ever catch these Grand Garland Booties on sale... holy shit, I'd snatch those right up.

So, after posting about about these midi skirts a few Friday Favorites ago, I went ahead and purchased one from Chicwish (since they're only like $30) and I absolutely love it!  It's sort of a peculiar fabric, but for $30... I'll take it! haha.  That being said, I've been eye'ing their floral skirts lately and think that might be my next purchase.  I especially love this colorful, Blossom Age skirt.

Haunted Dollhouse via Otterline

So, be still my heart, every bit of the little girl inside of my that never liked normal dollhouses is wondering why I never owned this beautiful modern-Addam's Family looking masterpiece!  It's so detail-oriented, I'm always totally floored when I see how much effort and vision someone put into a piece of art like this, because art is DEFINITELY not my knack... I can't even draw a stick person.

Dress: Madras Check Dress
Since I included it in the post, I thought I'd show this photo of Collin + I yesterday when we went out for his birthday! I wore my new customized Madras Check Dress and while it's a bit big since I decided to go with the "better safe than sorry" method, I absolutely LOVE it. I just know for next time to adjust the measurements!

To end.... this is basically amazing and it makes me laugh every. single. time.  Morticia + Gomez are OBVIOUSLY the best dancers that ever lived.

What are your favorites this Friday?
(Also, don't forget to comment your email is you want that eShakti promo code)
ALSO, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Spooky Suavecitas

Living in the south, we have to choose our hair products with 58493526 weather factors in mind because it's humid... always (it even manages to be humid in the winter here sometimes... it makes absolutely no sense).  So we thought we'd share one of our styling favorites with y'all.

I blame my Summers in Tennessee and time spent at Dollywood for my obsession with big hair.  Nothing completes an outfit better than some nice big hair, and in this case I had big hair and an amazing hair flower by NicCoCoCreations.  Black and red has always been one of my favorite color combinations...honestly it will always remind me of My Chemical Romance because I'm still 'emo' (;.  Feeling inspired, I themed two outfits around this color combo.

I wore my Suavecita Top Logo Tee around the house while doing my hair, and when I went out I changed into my 'night' outfit.  This hair flower complemented my victory rolls just as I expected, and made my casual top and pencil skirt a little more 'dressy' in my opinion.  Even with the crazy Georgia wind my hair did not budge.  This was actually my first time using Suavecita, but my husband has been using the male counter-part, Suavecito, for years so I knew what to expect from the quality, but I did not know it was going to be that great.

So because of the little logo on the Suavecita Pomade container and with Halloween on the horizon, NicCoCoCreations offered to send us some spooky hairpieces to style!  It's definitely not my norm but I loved mine and I've never worn a fascinator before and now I feel like I'm hooked - it's definitely something I'd like to experiment with.  There's a little saying I've heard around the vintage hair style community referring to when you've f*cked up your hair on one side and you can just well.... "put a flower on it".  I feel like with the size of these, my hair can look like absolute shit underneath on one side and no one would ever know... I LOVE THAT because I'm definitely no hairdresser. haha

// To end, above is a little GIF guide to the front curl a bunch of people have been asking for!  It's a little difficult to explain without showing you, so here 'ya go!  Suavecita Pomade is what I used to give my hair some texture and make it mold-able (and to tame the fly aways).  I usually use the men's version, Suavecito, because I steal it from my husband but I loved Suavecita because it worked just as well but the container is easier to stick in my purse and the smell is more feminine... and it's pink!

Jelly Bags +Maritime + Strawberries

Monday, October 27, 2014

We are admittedly the sort of people who use a purse until it dies, broken strap, clasp fell off, etc. and never really take the time to spoil ourselves with a new one (unless we find a really good deal) but we're always on the lookout for big bags that will last a long time.  So, we were excited to find that a company, Sun Jellies, was reproducing retro Jelly Bags!

CS 411 Corset c/o Orchard Corset
Hindi Gold  |  BAIT Footwear
Brooch  |  Luxulite

I carry a school+work bag in addition to my purse, so I'm the definition of "bag lady".  Also, when I'm absent-mindedly running out the door the morning after I DO change my purse... I've been known to grab the wrong one.  I know Amelia mentions it below, but I basically have Hermione Granger Syndrome and everything I want to bring with me, often doesn't fit in my purse.  Which is why I love my new friend Charlotte.

The Jelly material (recycled PVC) makes the bag incredibly durable and they're quite large so they'll fit your makeup bag + a book + all your other essentials! (Also, they have that super nostalgic jelly shoes smell which admittedly sounds creepy, but c'mon.... y'all know exactly what we're talking about.) Oh, and they're only $16!  I might go back for the red one.. her name is Dorothy

Lately, I've only been using vintage carpet-style bags for my everyday use, but this purse will definitely become part of my monthly purse rotation.  I love how much I could fit into my Jelly Bag, because that's always my biggest struggle..I try to be Mary Poppins or Hermione Granger and fit EVERYTHING into one purse.  This purse reminds me of Summer and I know it will be the best beach bag ever since you basically can't get sand in it.  I also am just a major sucker for the baby pink color and in my world it counts as a neutral color.

Did you love jelly shoes growing up as much as we did?
(pretend the blisters never happened)

Black Birds + Pink Roses

Saturday, October 25, 2014

So, a couple of weeks ago we received an email titled "Bernie Dexter Calling" and inside was a thank you for supporting her shop (we have a bit of an addiction).  We've loved Bernie inside + out for so long now, she's such a talented model and incredible lady... that we basically cried... there were literally almost real tears involved in reading that email.  She was sweet enough to surprise us with a couple of dresses each and we were just floored.  Here is our first of two.

Outfit Details
Yellow Heels  |  Modcloth
Hair Scarf  |  Vintage
Pearl Earrings  |  Gift (Similar)
Glasses  |  Ray-Ban

The first vintage reproduction dress I ever purchased was from Bernie Dexter so her dresses have always held such a special place in my heart.  I own A LOT of different styles of Bernie Dexter dresses, but this "Swan" style is the most fun of them all.  I generally always wear my hair pulled to the front, but I had to wear it behind me so you could see how amazing the shoulder details are on this beauty.  I'm sure you all know by now...but IT HAS POCKETS, and we are all suckers for pockets.

Most of the Bernie dresses I own have fun prints and this one definitely falls into that category!  I got so many different comments about the bird print ranging from The Beatles lyrics to The Notebook quotes.  I personally kept thinking of the Portlandia skit, "put a bird on it, because everything is better when you put a bird on it, including this dress.

I really struggled with photo lighting on the incredibly dreary week in Nashville, so I'm sorry about that!  I was totally devastated standing outside in my new Bernie dress, looking at the sky and basically wanting to punch something.  On a more positive note, I usually steer away from white because... I end up wearing 50% of the coffee I drink and red lipstick I wear, but I was really excited to see the Saturday Night Pinup Dress in Pink Rose Print show up at my front door!  This isn't a cut I would've chosen for myself because as I've said a million times... cleavage is my enemy, but I shimmied into my minimizing bra and was stoked to find that even without it (although I'm wearing it here), the neckline is cut PERFECTLY so you don't have to tug the dress up constantly.  Also these lovely roses make me feel like I should attend a tea party.  Like all her dresses, this one has a great shape and accommodates a really full petticoat perfectly!

And just so you guys can laugh at the fact that for about 5 seconds I thought "Oh, this white dress will look totally awesome in front of this WHITE WALL" here is my first "photo location". /facepalm.

Also, after Ashley's amazing post about Bernie Dexter (here), a few people asked about specific buy/sell/trade forums to find Bernie Dexter dresses. I personally LOVE the Pinup Girl Style buy/sell/trade forum (it's run by Pinup Girl Clothing).  A LOT of reproduction brands are sold on there, not exclusively PUG and I've seen Bernie's get listed every so often.

Do you own a Bernie Dexter dress?  Which is your favorite?
