50s + 60s Sunglasses Stylin'

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Sunglasses Warehouse recently asked us to be in their new vintage/retro themed Lookbook (we're in good company, our friend Sammi from The Soubrette Brunette was also asked to participate)   We were incredibly stoked, especially because (you may remember) only a few weeks ago, we were pining over our need for sunglasses in this Friday Favorites post.  The weekend Amelia was in town for my Pre-Wedding Celebration, we took a morning to break out our new sunglasses + for me to show her the rickety/dilapidated old bowling alley I've come to love so much.

We were given five (5) styles to choose from, one of us chose to embrace our inner Woodstock and the other our inner Sockhop!  These round tortoise shades and chrome cateyes were calling our names!

So when I saw these I immediately thought of this random vintage photo of a "space age" couple in Disney's Tomorrowland in the '60s.  I have always identified with the early 60's moreso than I do with the 50s (and some people don't see much of a difference, and it's sort of hard to explain, but maybe consider comparing Grease to the first season of Mad Men) so any chance I find to work an accessory or hairstyle in that really differentiates the two, I JUMP at it!  While these chrome cateyes aren't something I would normally choose for myself, I found myself LOVING them and was so happy they're what I ended up choosing.

gold vintage purse  |  my great Grandma <3

I usually stick to 50s inspired circle skirts, but my favorite vintage style is actually 1960s shift dresses.  I rarely get to wear them, because of my job and because they are a little s-c-a-n-d-a-l-o-u-s. However, when I saw these retro round sunglasses I knew I had to wear this dress.  The sunglasses add the perfect hippie flare, which is a side of me that I rarely get to embrace.  I also love that the tortoise color matched the brown tones in my dress, the gold in my purse and also my taupe shoes.  Now, if only I could transport myself back to 1969.

Also, we were delirious from heat exhaustion by the end of taking all these photos and had to change locations twice, anddd we admittedly got a little over-excited about trying the new A Beautiful Mess "Party! Party!" app for the first time. I made a little video out of a couple of our attempts.  The song is Moshi Moshi and it's by our all time favorite band, Brand New.

Best of all, Sunglasses Warehouse did a Spotlight on us on THEIR blog and gave us a promo code to share with y'all!  For 30% their already super-reasonably-priced sunglasses, enter "VintageJGP" at checkout (it expires 8/31)!  Everything runs between about $10 - $20, we can't help but recommend starting in the cateye section!

Where are you favorite sunglasses from?
Did you take a look at the site? Which sunglasses are your favorites?

  1. You guys are killing it in these photos. I love June's 50s cat eyes, but Amelia is really rocking the 60s style! I like it because it's so unexpected.
I'm really cheap about sunglasses because they're so easily lost or broken. I get a lot of mine off of Asos, since they're usually cute and nicely priced. Lately I've been really feeling the round, 30s style shades. They don't really suit me, though, so I'm thinking a pair of the "kitten eye" style, with a round lens and a frame that extends out a bit like a cat eye, would be a good middle ground.

  10. Thanks so much darling! I love it when my inner 60s is able to come out, and these glasses were the perfect platform for it.

I am the exact same way. I swear I break sunglasses like it's my job. I'm sure you'd look amazing in 30s style glasses!
