Friday Favorites #73

Friday, October 28, 2016

It's that time again!  Friday Favorites is here (past posts can be found here)!  This one almost didn't happen since I've been so exhausted trying to study for/take all my finals but, since I never sleep anyways, here it is!

In other news, 1) I'm addicted to plaid so sorry in advance for the amount of plaid you'll be seeing in FF's and 2) I've already started making my Black Friday List!  During October and November, I try to start saving money for Christmas gifts and so I can get more for my money on Black Friday/Cyber Monday so I usually keep a list of "must haves" including this Bernie Dexter Kelly Dress in Red Plaid  and Bernie Dexter Lauren Dress in Leaf Print.  Lots of cute stuff out there, tough decisions will have to be made. ;) Also, go take a closer look at this Retro Barbie Print Skirt because the fabric is AMAZING.

I don't know what it is about Autumn that reminds me of suitcases (maybe increased travels for holidays and that fact that I'm addicted to vintage luggage 365 days a year) but I love all these purses that look like tiny little suitcases.

I can't even begin to describe the amount of morbid curiosity I have about reading a children's book written by Stephen King so, naturally, I have already pre-ordered a copy of Charlie the Choo Choo.

Speaking of Stephen King, we also want to move into his spooky house in Maine immediately... imagine being a trick-or-treater in his town on Halloween. FIRST. STOP.

I was really excited to find all these cute brooches from RedHotKitten on Etsy for less than $10 when I was lurking around this week. Look at that little coffee one!

// Also, we're prepping for Halloween but our GMX costumes from last year will be my forever favorite.

All That Plaid

Funny Bones Brooch c/o Erstwilder  |  Red Flower Hat - vintage (similar)

It's blowing our minds that it's already almost Halloween!  We have a ton of plans for Halloween, which we are getting excited for! Halloween also happens to be Amanda's husband Collin's birthday so they get to celebrate that too as an added bonus! We don't generally wear a ton of spooky-themed clothing, but plaid is a constant for our autumn style and there are lots of ways to spooky it up so it's a piece you can wear through the rest of the season and into winter.

For the Red Plaid Wiggle Dress, I definitely recommend checking out their sizing chart.  The material is stretchy, but I had to size up to a medium in this one.   Also, as we've mentioned before, Unique Vintage is the exclusive US retailer of The Pretty Dress Company so we're excited to take their newest offering out for a spin, the Red + Navy Tartan Hepburn Swing Dress.  The Hepburn is Amanda's favorite TPDC style because 1) it doesn't have to be hemmed (YESSSS) and 2) it has a great shape without a petticoat.  It's also a great style for work for those of you whose offices feel like Antarctica like ours.

Amanda: Denim Overall Flare Skirt Jumper via the TOBS Original "Thread & Mitre" Collection
Yellow Work Blouse - Freddies of Pinewood  |  Love Letter Brooch - Merriweather
Bangle Stack - all via Splendette  |  Brown Maryjane Heels - Modcloth (similar)

Katie:  Denim Overall Flare Skirt Jumper via the TOBS Original "Thread & Mitre" Collection
Striped Mock Turtleneck - Forever 21 (Similar) | Red Wedges - Similar | 1940s Brooch - Luxulite

I'll start by saying this denim jumper from The Oblong Box Shop might be one of my new favorite articles of clothing.  It's the first piece in Denialle's denim collection and she definitely started with a "bang".  The jumper is inspired by the bomber girls of the 1940's and the original Teddy Girls and I've never seen a piece quite like it.  The quality of the entire piece and the denim is amazing.  We loved all the well-thought out touches like the full circle skirt (we didn't wear petticoats under ours but, one would fit), the criss-cross straps in the back and the little fold-over pockets.  If you're a first time The Oblong Box Shop shopper, this piece would be the perfect time to take advantage of the 10% off sign-up code (which is sitewide if you like something else) or follow to the bottom for a 15% off code for this specific jumper. And if you're wondering if the piece is worth the money - yes. One thousand times yes, you will not be disappointed.

Also, we hope everyone had an amazing weekend!  Katie went to a wedding and I spent the weekend studying for my Mortgages final... which might be one of the most boring law school topics ever.  Also, we both colored our hair. I have no problem admitting I get lazy with my hair because I color it myself but, Katie went lighter and I'm forever jealous of her ability to rock any color on the red spectrum.

Sending My Love Love Letter Brooch - MerriWeather | Taupe Inna Heels - BAIT Footwear

I know there are a lot of people, especially in the vintage + vintage reproduction community, who try and keep their style in one decade. I think I used to cling more to that ideal, but years of vintage collecting and blogging vintage reproduction clothing means that I have definitely broadened my horizons and I love getting to embrace each decade.  I will forever be envious of how chic and elegant Amanda looks in 1940's attire so I always try and channel her a little bit when I wear 40's style things.

When I do gravitate towards 1940's styles it's definitely the sweaters that I lean towards.  I think this is a.) because I'm always, always, always cold and b.) they just look so effortless if worn with pants or a skirt.  When I saw the design on The Purrfect Cardigan I think I may have died and gone to heaven.  It's no secret that I'm a crazy cat to have a chic way to display that is EVERYTHING to me.  Also, right now the sweater is 10% off using the promo code puurfect10.  Emmy Design, in my opinion, is so worth the price and one of the closest things to real vintage as far as reproductions go.  The quality is beyond amazing and it feels like someones grandma made this sweater.  Which is the highest compliment ever!

To complete my look, I've been loving this Mini Powder Set from Besame to brighten and correct my complexion.  I use the vanilla color all over and use the lavender under my eyes if my under-eye circles are a little yellow.   I love how authentic their products feel and have been using them non-stop lately.  My other current favorites are the Sweet Pink Rouge + Dusty Rose Lipstick.  Seriously, Sweet Pink has replaced all other blushes in my collection, it suits my skin that well!

Beige Lace-Up shoes - Aldo (similar)

I'm happy it's finally cooling down here for lots of reasons but, one of the main ones is that I get to break out my autumn/winter wardrobe.  As much as I love a comfy cotton sundress and bright colors, I have a lot fun changing the pace up a bit during cooler days and exploring some 40s inspired looks.  My summer wardrobe is about a half and half split between reproduction and vintage but I'd say my autumn/winter wardrobe is mostly vintage with pieces from a few brands I really love thrown in there and one of those is emmy design.

When I'm buying for fall/wainter, I tend to pick separates over dresses so I can layer more so, I always try to select pieces I can mix and match with other pieces in my wardrobe.  As for sizing, I've been seeing lots of questions pop up lately about sizing on the Ice Skater Cardigan (pictured above) and I will say, as a petite lady, I do intentionally shrink mine a bit as even the smallest size, a 34/36, is a bit loose.  I learned an amazing trick last year though!  Take a squirt bottle with water in it, dampen the sweater (you can even pick specific areas), and dry it.  My sweater above is post-squirt bottle trick.

Last, I know some ladies are hesitant about the price but, I'm going into my third winter with some of my emmy pieces this year and they're still in amazing condition.  I personally tend to buy less during the colder seasons so I put a little bit more towards individual pieces that will become a staples.  Trust me, these pieces (especially these sweaters) are worth the investment.
